A country with 890 million consumers below 45 years of
age, India is the second fastest economy in the world with its organized
retail galloping at over 30 percent per year.
The total consumer spend in the country in 2004 05 was Rs. 18,540
billion at the current prices and a large part of this was accounted
for by the 300 million middle class, the real consumers.
Reports indicate that these numbers could swell past 600 million by
2010 considered sufficient to establish India as one of the largest
consumer markets of the world.
Retailing in India
- Organized Retail Rs. 350 billion constitutes about
3.4 per cent of retail sales but is growing at over 30 per cent.
- Organized retail is projected to cross Rs. 1,000 billion mark by
2010.
- Rs. 200 billion investment in pipe line.
- Top 6 cities account for 66 percent of total organized retailing.
- Overwhelming acceptance of modern retail formats.
- From the current 95 operational shopping centers with approximately
22 million sq. ft space, India to have over 375 shopping centers /
malls covering over 90 million sq. ft. quality retail space by 2007
end.
- 50 hypermarkets, 305 large department stores, 1500 super markets
and over 10,000 new outlets under construction.
- Additional retail space to add Rs. 300 billion of business to organized
