Overview of the Ganga Sagar Mela
Ganga Sagar Mela, 24 Pargana, is hosted at the confluence of the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal at a place called Sagar about 105 kilometers South of Kolkata.
Also known as Gangasagar Fair or Ganga Snan, it is the annual gathering of Hindu pilgrims during Makar Sankranti (14th January, 2009) at Sagar Island or Sagardwip in West Bengal, India. The Gangasagar Mela is usually a three-day affair and starts a couple of days before the actual Ganga Snan date. Hindu pilgrims from India and around the world arrive at the Sagar Island to be a part of the grand social milieu and take a dip in the sacred waters of River Ganga before she merges into the Bay of Bengal.
The Ganga Sagar Mela, Kolkata serves as a meeting ground of various cultures. According to statistical records, about 5 lac pilgrims assemble here to take a holy dip and seek the blessings of the great sage, Kapil Muni. |
